Yes, pre-workout expires. It carries a best-before date, and while it often stays usable past that date if stored dry, its potency and flavor can fade over time. Clumping, off smells, or a strange taste are signs to replace it.
Best-before vs unusable
The best-before date is about peak quality, not a hard safety cutoff. Stored properly, powder often remains usable for a while after, though some ingredients may gradually lose strength. If it looks, smells, and tastes normal, it is generally fine.
Signs your pre-workout has gone off
- Hard clumping: usually means moisture got in, which degrades quality.
- Off or sour smell.
- Changed taste or texture.
- Discoloration.
When in doubt, replace it. A degraded pre-workout will not perform well anyway.
How to store pre-workout
- Keep the lid sealed tight.
- Store in a cool, dry place, away from heat and sunlight.
- Keep the scoop and your hands dry to avoid introducing moisture.
- Do not leave it in a hot car or a steamy bathroom.
Note on the tingle and clumping
A little natural settling is normal and not the same as moisture clumping. The Beta-Alanine tingle is also unrelated to freshness, as we explain in why pre-workout makes you tingle.
